70% phone shipment in the world are from cell phone manufacturers in Shenzhen, but 

Apple earns the most profit. What does Apple do?

Last Friday，USPTO exposed a patent-trichromatic spectrophotometry camera module by Apple. Apple is only a mobile phone 

manufacturer, not a digital camera or a camcorders manufacturer, but Apple exceeds 

them in research depth and solution, which means its importance on technology. Since 

2013, homogenization has happened in high end smart phones: Qualcomm chipset, 

Sony camera, JDI display. All the phones from different brands are same inside. Almost 

all the Shenzhen cell phone manufacturers become integrator. But Apple has its own iOS 

and CPU, which bring a high premium. Apple can earn most of the profit because of its 

advance in technology and user experience. There is no profit without competitive 

products, which is the common failing in cell phone manufacturers. 

Now Shenzhen government puts forward the slogan of Quality is the future. The 

investment in R&D has reached 4% of Shenzhen GDP and the highest proportion is 4.4% 

from Israel. Cell phone is the biggest industry in Shenzhen. With the foster of big 

companies, improving the R&D is the most important goal for cell phone manufacturers. 

It makes the manufacturers more and more strict on quality, which is the final target of 

Shenzhen government. 

The New CEO of Intel choose Shenzhen for his first stop in China and Yang Xu, the 

President of Intel in China, choose Shenzhen to be the IDF site, which has been held in 

Beijing five times. Shenzhen has been the hardware center instead of copycat gradually. 

In the future, Created in China will realize in Shenzhen first. Cell phone manufacturers 

will be the forth-goer and also the first industry to benefit from it.
